Absolute Timing of the Crab Pulsar with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer

چکیده
We have monitored the phase of the main X-ray pulse of the Crab pulsar with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) for almost 8 years, since the start of the mission in 1996 January. The absolute time of RXTE’s clock is sufficiently accurate to allow this phase to be compared directly with the radio profile. Our monitoring observations of the pulsar took place bi-weekly (during the periods when it was at least 30 from the Sun), and we correlated the data with radio timing ephemerides derived from observations made at Jodrell Bank. We have determined the phase of the X-ray main pulse for each observation with a typical error in the individual data points of 50 ms. The total ensemble is consistent with a phase that is constant over the monitoring period, with the X-ray pulse leading the radio pulse by periods in phase, or ms in time. The error estimate is dominated 0.0102 0.0012 344 40 by a systematic error of 40 ms in the radio data, arising from uncertainties in the variable amount of pulse delay due to interstellar scattering and instrumental calibration. The statistical error is 0.00015 periods, or 5 ms. The separation of the main pulse and interpulse appears to be unchanging at timescales of a year or less, with an average value of periods. There is no apparent variation in these values with energy over the 0.4001 0.0002 2–30 keV range. The lag between the radio and X-ray pulses may be constant in phase (i.e., rotational in nature) or constant in time (i.e., due to a path-length difference). We are not (yet) able to distinguish between these two interpretations. Subject headings: pulsars: individual (Crab Pulsar) — X-rays: stars

متن کاملTiming accuracy of the Swift X-Ray Telescope in WT mode
Context. The X-Ray Telescope (XRT) on board Swift was mainly designed to provide detailed position, timing and spectroscopic information on gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows. During the mission lifetime the fraction of observing time allocated to other types of source has been steadily increased. Aims. In this paper, we report on the results of the in-flight calibration of the timing capabilitie...

We present a new phase-coherent timing analysis for the young, energetic pulsar PSR B0540−69 using 7.6 yr of data from the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. We measure the braking index, n = 2.140± 0.009, and discuss our measurement in the context of other discordant values reported in the literature. We present an improved source position from the phase-coherent timing of the pulsar, to our knowled...
متن کاملX - ray Timing Observations of PSR J 1930 + 1852 in the Crab - like SNR G 54 . 1 + 0 . 3
We present new X-ray timing and spectral observations of PSR J1930+1852, the young energetic pulsar at the center of the non-thermal supernova remnant G54.1+0.3. Using data obtained with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE ) and Chandra X-ray observatories we have derived an updated timing ephemeris of the 136 ms pulsar spanning 6 years. During this interval, however, the period evolution sho...
متن کاملDiscovery of an Ultra-fast X-ray Pulsar in the Supernova Remnant N157B
We present the serendipitous discovery of 16 ms pulsed X-ray emission from the Crab-like supernova remnant N157B in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This is the fastest spinning pulsar associated with a supernova remnant (SNR). Observations with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), centered on the field containing SN1987A, reveal an X-ray pulsar with a narrow pulse profile. Archival ASCA X-ray da...
